Welcome to West Elementary, where "It's all about our kids!"  At West, our faculty and staff are committed 100% to helping each student to learn, to grow and to become a lifelong learner.  At West, we partner with our families and community members to provide an excellent learning experience for our students.

 

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION

2008-2009 School Year

 

Kindergarten registration for the 2008 school year will begin mid-March. All forms will be available online or upon request from the West Office.  Please see the Kindergarten Registration link on this page for specific information, dates and times. 

 

WEST SPRING CARNIVAL

 

The West Spring Carnival will be held on Saturday, April 19th.  Please see April’s newsletter for more information, or contact PTO President Tabatha Walls at tawalls@marysville.k12.oh.us if you’d like to volunteer.

 

OHIO ACHIEVEMENT TESTING

 

The Ohio Achievement Tests (OAT) will be given to grades 3, 4, and 5 the week of April 28th, 29th, 30th and May 1st.  Make-up tests will be given on May 2nd and into the following week, if necessary.  You can help by making sure your child has plenty of sleep the night before and a nourishing breakfast that morning. ALL ABOUT WEST ELEMENTARY

 

Some highlights from the 2006-07 school year:

  • Based on the Ohio Achievement Testing, West was named an “Excellent School” for the third year in a row (2004-05, 2005-06 and 2006-07)
  • Has achieved Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for the past three years
  • Participated in year #1 of the Honda Project SOAR (Schools of Ohio Achieving Results); helping students to set goals, create a plan and achieve personal results!
  • Started the West Elementary Student Council
  • Implemented the “B.U.G. Club,” which provides recognition for any student who can bring up at least one grade while not dropping in any subjects.  B.U.G. stands for Bringing Up Grades, and the club is sponsored by PTO
  • Implemented the “Color Wheel” school-wide positive behavior plan
  • Introduced new textbook series for Social Studies and Science, as well as upgraded then current Everyday Math curriculum
  • Continued our excellent Parent/Family Volunteer Program (helping to tutor students in reading and math)
  • Acquired funding to create a leveled reading book room to support Guided Reading instruction
  • Provided reading intervention support for grades K-3 and above, as needed
  • Ohio Reads Grant Recipient
  • Reading Buddies Program (Students in the upper and lower grades buddy to share the joy of reading)
  • Grade 5 participated in “Exchange City,” sponsored by Jr. Achievement
  • Initiated the Junior Great Books Reading Volunteer Program
  • Students in grades 3-5 participated in “Study Island
  • Right-To-Read-Week included several activities, including visiting author, Cincinnati native, Andrea Cheng
  •  Grades 1 and 2 welcomed an Artist-in-Residence and learned about history, patriotism and government via music, movement, writing, drama and set construction
  • Continued the Character Education Program, which includes the “Good Character Word of the Month” and our Anti-Bullying campaign
  • Students utilized a grant from the Delaware Arts Council to create several artistic mosaic displays to beautify our hallways
  • The Educational Department from the Columbus Zoo visited to teach students about endangered animals and protecting our environment
  • West PTO remained active by supporting several activities, including the Spring Carnival, Secret Santa and Field Day
  • Hosted “Interesting People, Interesting Jobs,” which welcomed people from our community to share information about their professions with our students and staff
  • Participated in the Delaware Food Drive and Coats for Kids Program
  • Students raised money for several worthy causes, including: Cystic Fibrosis, Leukemia Society, Jump Rope for Heart

 

IMPORTANT GOALS FOR 2007-08

  • Developing our Guided Reading Program
  • Participating in Honda Project S.O.A.R (Year #2)
  • Creating a “Student Mentoring Program: for children new to BV West
  • Implementing strategies and supports to insure student academic success
