BVLS students will experience many benefits with the updates to the high school. This will help with the upcoming changes our students will experience in the future because the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) is mandating the Ohio Core for 2014
The Ohio Core will effect our current 8th grade student's graduation requirements when they earn their diploma in 2014.
BVLS teachers and administrators are working on understanding the Ohio Core and creating courses to fulfill these new Ohio Graduation Requirements by 2014. The main changes are for math and science
Currently, students are required to take 3 units of credit in mathematics.
The Ohio Core requires students to earn 4 units of credit in mathematics, including one unit of Algebra II or the equivalent. (ODE is still working out the definition of what "equivalent" will mean.)

Currently students are required to earn 3 science credits (at least one unit must be in Biology, one unit must be in Physical Science).
The Ohio Core still requires 3 units of credit in science, but with these new specifications:
3 units, including inquiry-based laboratory experience in these subject areas or their equivalents:
Physical Science (one unit) Life Science (one unit) Advanced Science (one unit) Chemistry, Physics, or other physical science, Advanced Biology or other life science, Astronomy, Physical Geology, or other Earth or Space Science.
Another requirement is to include Economics and Financial Literacy. Each school will integrate the study of economics and financial literacy. Currently students do have economics and financial literacy in some of the courses, but the Ohio Core requires districts to ensure all students will learn Economics and Financial Literacy content.

A brief overview BVLS earned 26 out of the 30 benchmarks set by the State of Ohio. These are from the Ohio Achievement Tests (OAT) results (grades 3-8), the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT) results, the graduation rate and student's attendance rate. New to the state report cards: Value Added.
Students are expected to gain a year's worth of growth based on the results of Ohio Achievement Tests in 4th grade through 8th grade, reading and math only. There will be resources to help everyone understand this new section of the state report card.
